NEW DELHI: India summoned the Iranian diplomats, including Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) Mohammad Javad Hosseini, on Tuesday after the latest attack on UAE merchant vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
An Indian sailor was killed and six others got injured after a strike by Iran on the UAE oil tankers on Tuesday.
Post the incident, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has summoned the Iranian envoys, IANS reported.
In total, two UAE tankers – Mombasa and Al Bahiyah – were hit by two Iranian cruise missiles in Omani territorial waters. The tankers were struck while transiting the Strait of Hormuz’s southern passage.
The Indian Embassy in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has condoled the death of the Indian seafarer and noted that it was closely monitoring the situation.
“We condole the tragic loss of an Indian seafarer in the attacks on two vessels, Al Bahiyah & Mombasa B. We are closely monitoring the situation and are in touch with the local authorities to render all possible assistance to the injured and families,” it stated on X.
UAE’s Ministry of Defence informed that the Iranian attack caused material damage to both tankers after fires broke out on board. Later on, the fire was brought under control.
Strongly condemning the attack, the Ministry of Defence described it as a serious violation of international law that threatens regional security and stability. Further, it noted that the UAE reserves the right to respond to the escalation and is looking forward to take necessary measures to protect its territory, people, residents, national interests and strategic assets.
