Know Yourself: The First Step Towards Choosing The Right Purpose In Life

Must read

The first step towards choosing the right goal is self-awareness. Every person should honestly ask themselves: Who am I? What are my strengths? What are my weaknesses? What skills has Allah blessed me with? These questions help us understand ourselves better. Without self-awareness, people often spend years following someone else’s dreams instead of discovering their own purpose.

Shahid Farooq Bhat

In today’s fast-changing world, many people, especially young people, are searching for success, happiness, and peace of mind. We live in an age of modern technology, better education, and endless opportunities. Yet, despite these blessings, many people struggle with stress, anxiety, depression, and confusion about their future. They work hard, but many still feel empty and dissatisfied. One of the main reasons behind this is the lack of a clear purpose in life. When a person begins a journey without knowing the destination, he may keep moving, but he will never know whether he is heading in the right direction.

Islam teaches us that life is not without purpose. Every human being has been created for a meaningful reason. Whatever profession we choose, whether we become a doctor, engineer, teacher, businessman, farmer, or civil servant, our faith should remain at the centre of our lives. Our education, career, behaviour, and relationships should all reflect Islamic values. If our only goal is wealth, fame, or worldly success, we may achieve them but still fail to find real happiness. However, when our goals are connected with the pleasure of Allah and the desire to benefit humanity, success becomes more meaningful and lasting.

Choosing the right purpose in life is not difficult if we follow a few important principles.

First, Know Yourself

The first step towards choosing the right goal is self-awareness. Every person should honestly ask themselves: Who am I? What are my strengths? What are my weaknesses? What are my interests? What skills has Allah blessed me with? These questions help us understand ourselves better. A person who knows his abilities and limitations is more likely to make wise decisions. Without self-awareness, people often spend years following someone else’s dreams instead of discovering their own purpose.

Second, Understand Your Real Needs

The second step is to understand what truly matters in life. We should think about what we really want to achieve and how we can contribute positively to our family and society. Unfortunately, many young people choose careers only because their friends or relatives have chosen them. Some want to become doctors because everyone admires doctors. Others choose a business because someone else became successful in it. But every person is different. Allah has blessed each individual with unique talents and abilities. True success comes when we choose a path that matches our own strengths, interests, and values.

Third, Set Clear And Realistic Goals

Once we understand ourselves, we should set clear and realistic goals. A goal should not be vague or based on fantasy. Instead, it should be specific, practical, and achievable. We should know exactly what we want to accomplish, why we want to achieve it, and what steps are needed to reach it. Students, in particular, should avoid confusion by making proper plans for their education and future careers. Clear goals give direction to our efforts, while unrealistic expectations often lead to disappointment, frustration, and loss of confidence.

Fourth, Respect Time And Stay Disciplined

No goal can be achieved without discipline and proper time management. Every goal should have a realistic timeline. Success does not come overnight. It requires patience, consistency, and hard work. Many people fail not because they lack talent, but because they lose focus or keep changing their goals. Those who remain committed to one meaningful objective and continue working with determination eventually succeed. Time is one of Allah’s greatest blessings, and those who value it are more likely to succeed in both this world and the Hereafter.

Fifth, Never Stop Improving Yourself

Success is not a destination; it is a lifelong journey. Every day gives us an opportunity to become a better person. We should continue improving our knowledge, character, worship, relationships, and professional skills. We should learn from our mistakes instead of becoming discouraged by them. Self-reflection and self-improvement help us grow into responsible and successful individuals. A person who keeps learning and correcting himself not only succeeds personally but also becomes a source of guidance and inspiration for others.

The ideas shared in this article were inspired by an online lecture delivered through Zoom by Ustadh Yasir Ahmad Sheikh, the founder of Al-Miftaah Academy. The lecture offered practical guidance on setting meaningful goals and living a purposeful life in the light of Islamic teachings. I have mentioned this academy in several of my previous articles because, since its establishment in March 2022, it has been making valuable contributions to Islamic education, spiritual development, and intellectual growth. Through Islamic courses, Ramadan programmes, Arabic language classes, Seerah courses, and other educational activities, the academy has helped hundreds of students strengthen their knowledge, faith, and personal development. What started as a sincere vision has now become a growing platform of learning and guidance. Its journey continues to inspire students from different backgrounds to seek knowledge with sincerity and purpose.

Every successful life begins with a clear purpose. If we make faith the foundation of our goals, understand ourselves, plan wisely, value our time, and continue improving every day, we can achieve success not only in our careers but also in our personal lives. More importantly, we will find something that many people spend their whole lives searching for—inner peace, contentment, and a meaningful life. That is the true success every human being should strive for.
