Intensive operations, community awareness, seizures mark ongoing Nasha Mukt Abhiyan

SRINAGAR: In an unwavering commitment to combat the rising menace of drug abuse and trafficking, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have launched an extensive multi-pronged campaign under the banner of Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir Abhiyan. The ongoing initiative, spanning across districts like Baramulla, Anantnag, Handwara, Awantipora, Shopian, Kupwara, Ganderbal, Budgam, Pulwama, and Kulgam, aims to create awareness, strengthen enforcement, and foster community participation to build a drug-free society.
Police Successes in Drug Seizures and Arrests
The police have recorded significant successes in recent days. In Baramulla, during naka checking operations, police intercepted multiple vehicles and arrested three drug peddlers. At Nowpora, a police team from Police Station Sheeri stopped an auto-rickshaw and recovered approximately 42 grams of charas-like substance from the driver, Nasir Ahmad Dar, a resident of Shalteng Sheeri. Similarly, a Mahindra Thar was halted at Wagoora, leading to the recovery of about 56 grams of charas from two individuals, Faizan Farooq Rather and Mohd Yaseen Khanday.
In Handwara, police arrested Mudasir Ahmad Dar at Sultanpora Crossing after recovering Spasmo-Proxyvon Plus capsules from his possession. All accused have been booked under relevant sections of law, and further investigations are underway.
In a major breakthrough in Anantnag, police arrested the second accused, Abdul Rashid Bhat, involved in the transportation of a massive 110 kilograms of Ganja, linked to case FIR No. 39/2026. The arrest was made during naka/checking at Shalgam Crossing, as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks.
Awareness Campaigns and Community Engagement
Parallel to enforcement actions, the police have intensified awareness campaigns aimed at educating the youth and general public about the detrimental effects of drugs. In Handwara, extensive programmes were held across schools and public spaces, targeting students and community members. Emphasis was laid on empowering youth to resist peer pressure and make healthy choices. Medical shop inspections were also carried out to prevent the unauthorized sale of prescription drugs, with shopkeepers sensitized on legal compliance.
In Awantipora, awareness programmes at Government Middle School Kawani and Government Boys Higher Secondary School Batagund highlighted the importance of a drug-free lifestyle. Similarly, in Shopian, police inspected chemist shops near Keller Hospital, emphasizing strict adherence to sale regulations under the NDPS Act.
Ganderbal saw joint inspections of medical stores, with one shop sealing after violating norms. Urine drug screening camps were organized at Lar to facilitate early detection of substance abuse, reinforcing preventive measures.
In Budgam, police held multiple awareness events and Village-Level Police Community Partnership Group (PCPG) meetings. These gatherings aimed to sensitize residents and especially youth about the dangers of drug abuse, encouraging community cooperation in identifying and reporting illicit activities.
Strengthening Enforcement with Innovative Measures
Kupwara police have further intensified their anti-drug operations by deploying trained K9 sniffer dogs to detect concealed narcotics during naka checks and raids. This innovative approach has significantly improved detection capabilities, especially in densely populated and remote areas. Checkpoints are established at strategic locations, and surprise inspections of colleges, pharmacies, and drug stores are regularly conducted to ensure compliance with legal norms.
In Pulwama, proactive measures included destroying illegal poppy cultivation on private land, in collaboration with the Excise, Agriculture, and Revenue Departments. FIRs have been registered against landowners involved in illicit cultivation, with destruction of the crops carried out in accordance with legal procedures. Awareness rallies and student programmes have also been organized to highlight the dangers of drug abuse.
Kulgam police conducted an anti-drug awareness programme at Hanfia Model Institute, where students learned about the harmful effects of drugs and the importance of resisting peer pressure. The police continue to urge citizens to actively cooperate, share information, and support the mission of a drug-free society.
Community Participation and Future Outlook
The success of these initiatives hinges on active community participation. Police officials have reiterated their zero-tolerance policy towards drug peddling and misuse, calling upon citizens to report suspicious activities. The ongoing campaigns aim to build a collective front against drug trafficking, emphasizing that eradication of the drug menace is a shared responsibility.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police remain resolute in their efforts to create a safer, healthier society. The combination of enforcement, awareness, and community engagement under the Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir Abhiyan is expected to yield long-term positive impacts, paving the way for a future where the youth can thrive free from the shadow of drugs.
The police appeal to everyone—parents, teachers, community leaders, and youth—to unite in this noble cause and contribute towards a drug-free Jammu and Kashmir.
