The Power Of Laylatul Qadr: ‘A Night Where Sincere Tears Are Never Returned Unanswered’

Must read

Hidden within Ramadan’s last ten nights, Laylatul Qadr marks the descent of the Quran and the descent of angels. The believers must move beyond distraction and seek forgiveness through the Prophet’s (SAW) supplication: ‘Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni.’

The blessed month of Ramadan is indeed a beautiful time to purify our souls, seek forgiveness and strive for a closer relationship with Allah. It is the time of self-reflection and spiritual-rebirth. It is the time to build our character, the time to change ourselves and delve deep into the love of Allah in order to strengthen our connection with the Lord Almighty.

Therefore, it is the month of immense goodness, and it is during this blessed month that we are granted the powerful night of Laylatul Qadr. After spending days in fasting, prayer and self-reflection, Ramadan brings us to its most precious gift – The Night of Decree. Hidden within the last 10 nights, this sacred night carries rewards beyond imagination. It is a night where the Heavens open, angels descend, and sincere tears are never returned unanswered. It is a night filled with mercy, where forgiveness is sought with hope and granted through Allah’s infinite compassion.

The Blessed Night Of The Quran’s Descent

Allah mentions the Night of Decree in the Quran: “Indeed, We sent it (Quran) down during the Night of Decree.” (97:1)

On this night, Allah sent down the Quran from the Preserved Tablet (Lawh al Mahfuz) to the First Sky (Baytt al Izzah). It was descended from the preserved tablet to the Lower Heaven on the Night of Decree; from where it was revealed in parts and portions to the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) for the next 23 years. This makes Laylatul Qadr a truly honoured and momentous night. The Quran, which serves as a source of guidance, healing for hearts and the eternal light for mankind, was descended. As this blessed night is marked by the descent of the Quran, it makes the night special and powerful. Therefore, reciting, reflecting upon and seeking to understand the Quran on this sacred night are among the most beautiful and rewarding acts of worship.

Significance

The significance of the Night of Decree is stated in Verse 3, Chapter 97 of the Holy Quran: “The Night of Glory is better than a thousand months.” (97:3)

The Night of Decree is the most powerful night in existence. It is better than a thousand months, which equals more than 83 years, longer than the average lifetime. Imagine the massive reward: a thousand months of Ibadah. Allah gives the Ummah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) an opportunity to earn the reward of a lifetime in just one night.

When mankind reaches a point of darkness and is in need of a reform, Allah answers their need by sending a new reformer; The Night of Decree should act as a reformer for us. This Night is a favour from Allah, which we need to understand and therefore become conscious of worshipping Him in the best and most special way. Spending the night in Ibadah(worship), pondering and reflecting in order to change something are the things of utmost importance. It is incumbent on each believer to increase their worship and pray sincerely.

A sign of piety of the heart is to do the extra acts of worship on this night. It is not a night to socialise, watch phones and waste time, but rather a time of seclusion, a time to move the heart by the remembrance of the Lord Almighty. It is the best time to ask forgiveness for the multitude of sins that we carry on our shoulders, because if we achieve forgiveness, it is the best achievement we could ever have. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) himself guided the believers toward a simple yet powerful Dua to seek forgiveness on this blessed night.

Aisha (RA) reported that she asked the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) what she should say if she found Laylatul Qadr. He replied: Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni” (O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me.” (Reported in Sunan Al Tirmidhi)

This brief yet profound supplication beautifully reflects the essence of Laylatul Qadr. It reminds every believer that no matter how heavy the burden of sins may be, the mercy of Allah is far greater.

Ultimately, Laylatul Qadr stands as a timeless reminder of Allah’s mercy and generosity. It encourages us to seek forgiveness, renew our faith and strengthen the connection with our Creator. Therefore, we must take this time very seriously and strive earnestly in worship and devotion, following the example of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W). For those who spend this night in sincere worship and supplication, it holds the promise of spiritual renewal.

Seeking The Blessed Night

The exact date of the Night of Decree is hidden by the wisdom of Allah. However, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) encouraged believers to seek Laylatul Qadr during the last ten nights of Ramadan, especially on the odd nights. This guidance is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim:

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: Seek it in the last 10 nights of Ramadan. (Reported in Sahih Al Bukhari & Sahih Muslim).

In another narration; Seek it on the odd nights of the last 10 nights of Ramadan. (Reported in Sahih Al Bukhari).

Therefore, Laylatul Qadr occurs within the last ten nights of Ramadan, most likely during the odd nights. Its exact date remains concealed so that believers strive earnestly in worship, seeking Allah’s mercy with devotion and sincerity. As the final nights of Ramadan approach, the search for this blessed night becomes a journey of faith, humility, and hope.

May Allah allow us to witness the blessed night and grant us the ability to make the most of its immense blessings.

In essence, Laylatul Qadr represents the pinnacle of spiritual opportunity in the blessed month of Ramadan. Described in the Quran as better than a thousand months of Ibadah, this night brings with it the immense blessings, mercy and forgiveness. We, being involved in plenty of sins, have a beautiful opportunity to strive for a better and closer relationship with Allah. As mankind today stands divided and peace often seems distant, let us take this blessed night as an opportunity to turn sincerely to Allah, seeking peace, unity and compassion for all of humanity and Ummah.

Perhaps the greatest lesson of Laylatul Qadr is that even one night of true devotion can illuminate a lifetime. May we all strive to embrace its blessings and emerge from Ramadan with hearts purified and faith strengthened.
