PM mourns demise, calls him ‘extraordinary’
NEW DELHI: Fauja Singh, the 114-year-old marathon runner, has tragically passed away in a road accident in Punjab’s Jalandhar district. Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday paid heartfelt condolences to Singh, fondly known as the “Turbaned Tornado”.
Singh was struck by an unidentified vehicle while crossing a road in his native village, Beas Pind, in Punjab on Monday.
“Fauja Singh Ji was extraordinary due to his unique personality and his approach to inspiring India’s youth on the crucial topic of fitness,” PM Modi said, expressing his condolences. “He was a remarkable athlete with unwavering determination. His passing has caused great sorrow. My condolences are with his family and his countless admirers.”
Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria described Singh as a “symbol of resilience” and said his legacy would continue to inspire a drug-free Punjab. “Deeply saddened by the passing of Sardar Fauja Singh Ji, the legendary marathon runner and symbol of resilience,” Kataria posted on X.
Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh also paid tributes to Singh’s extraordinary life and unwavering spirit, saying, “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Fauja Singh Ji, the legendary marathon runner, at the age of 114 in a tragic road accident.”
Singh’s remarkable life and achievements have inspired millions worldwide. He began running marathons at 89 and went on to complete several prestigious races, including the London Marathon and the Toronto Waterfront Marathon. At 100, he became the first centenarian to complete a full marathon, cementing his place in history.
As the world mourns the loss of this incredible athlete, Fauja Singh’s legacy will continue to motivate generations with his story of perseverance and determination.
