Rs 250 increase in disability pension after 9 years an ‘insult’

Must read

As a visually impaired student, I, Akhtar Hussain, am compelled to express my deep concerns about the recent increase in disability pension by the social welfare department. After a long time of nine years, the pension has been increased by a mere Rs 250, from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,250. This paltry increase is an insult to the struggles of persons with disabilities, who rely heavily on this pension to meet their basic needs.

The issue is further compounded by delayed payments, with many individuals facing months-long pendency. This lack of timely support exacerbates their difficulties and underscores the government’s apathy towards their needs. Persons with disabilities often depend on this pension to access essential services, including healthcare, rehabilitation, and education. As someone who has experienced the challenges of visual impairment firsthand, I can attest to the importance of timely and adequate support.

The current increase is woefully inadequate, considering the rising costs of living and the specific needs of persons with disabilities. A substantial increase in the pension amount is necessary to ensure that persons with disabilities can lead a dignified life. The government must consider the actual needs of persons with disabilities, including their requirements for assistive devices, healthcare, rehabilitation, and education.

The government’s failure to ensure the timely disbursement of pensions is a clear indication of its lack of prioritisation of the needs of persons with disabilities. This issue needs to be addressed urgently, and the government must take concrete steps to ensure that pensions are released on time. As a person with a disability, I urge the government to take immediate action to resolve this issue and ensure that persons with disabilities receive the support they need.

I strongly emphasise that the government must take a more proactive and inclusive approach to addressing the needs of persons with disabilities. The recent increase in disability pension is a step in the right direction, but it falls far short of meeting the actual needs of persons with disabilities. I hope that the government will take my concerns seriously and take immediate action to address the issues faced by persons with disabilities.
