SRINAGAR: Prominent social and student rights activist Er Ehtisham Khan, Co-founder of The Purpose (NGO), has strongly condemned the horrific ragging incident at Al-Ameen Medical College, Karnataka, where a Kashmiri MBBS student was subjected to brutal assault and harassment by senior students. Khan has formally written to the Chief Minister of Karnataka, the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, and the administration of Al-Ameen Medical College, urging immediate action against the perpetrators and demanding stringent measures to ensure the safety of all students.
“This is not just an act of ragging; it is a serious violation of a student’s dignity and safety. No educational institution should allow such barbaric behavior under any circumstances. The guilty must face exemplary punishment to ensure such incidents do not repeat,” Er Khan said in a statement.
Khan appreciated the prompt intervention of J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who swiftly took up the matter with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The Karnataka authorities had promptly identified the accused, and an FIR was registered to initiate legal proceedings. He also expressed gratitude to Karnataka CM for his assurance that strict action will follow against those responsible.
“This intervention is commendable, and I sincerely thank both Chief Ministers for prioritizing the safety of students. However, addressing ragging requires more than just reactive measures—it demands a robust and proactive approach from educational institutions. Colleges must implement stricter anti-ragging policies, enforce rigorous monitoring, and ensure that no student ever has to suffer such trauma again,” Khan added.
In his formal letters, Er Ehtisham urged the Karnataka government to conduct a comprehensive review of anti-ragging policies in colleges and introduce institutional reforms that will safeguard students, especially those from outside the state. He has also called upon the administration of Al-Ameen Medical College to take responsibility and ensure justice for the victim while reinforcing preventive mechanisms to eliminate such toxic practices.
