Embracing Life’s Detours: Tawakkul And Finding Divine Purpose In The Unexpected

Must read

Sometimes, when life gets tough, we drift away from Allah. We feel ashamed like we’ve strayed too far to return. But the truth is, no matter how far you’ve gone, it only takes one step to return to Him.

Life is full of twists and turns, and things don’t go as planned. We face heartbreak, failure, and moments of profound confusion. In those times, it’s easy to feel lost and question why things happen the way they do. However, one of the most beautiful lessons in Islam is that everything happens for a reason. Allah has already written our story in His infinite wisdom, and every part of it, even the painful ones, is part of a greater purpose.

How Allah Tests Those He Loves:

It’s hard to see trials as a sign of love. When we go through pain, we often ask, “Why me?” But the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) taught us that Allah tests those He loves. These tests are not meant to break us but to bring us closer to Him. They remind us that this world is temporary, and our real purpose is to grow spiritually and strengthen our connection with Allah. From a psychological perspective, struggles often lead to personal growth, a concept known as post-traumatic growth. After enduring hardship, many people develop resilience, empathy, and a stronger sense of purpose. The same is true for our spiritual lives. Every test brings us closer to Allah, shaping us into better versions of ourselves.

Allah mentions in the blessed Quran, “Be patient ˹O, Prophet˺, for your patience, is only with Allah’s help. Do not grieve over those ˹who disbelieve˺, nor be distressed by their schemes.”(Surah Al-Anfal, 16:127)

The Greater Purpose Behind Our Trials:

When life is hard, it’s almost impossible to understand why it’s happening. We feel the world is against us and wonder if things will ever improve. But Allah knows what we do not. He sees the bigger picture, while we see only a tiny part of it. Our struggles may seem random or unfair, but they are all part of Allah’s perfect plan. Every delay, closed door, and hardship leads us to something better. Patience is considered a virtuous good deed. At times, we may think that we are at a loss when our patience does not bear the result that we aspire to. Verily Allah reminds us that those who are patient are among the good-doers whose rewards are promised. In the blessed Quran, the almighty Allah mentions, “And be patient; verily, Allah loses not the reward of the good-doers.” (Surah Hud, 11:115)

Trusting Allah Can Be Difficult:

Let’s be honest: trusting Allah is not always easy. When things fall apart, we feel scared and frustrated. We want immediate answers, and it’s hard to have patience. It’s okay to feel this way. Even the strongest believers had moments of doubt and fear. It’s hard to believe things will improve when life feels like it’s falling apart. Our minds crave control, and letting go feels scary. We wonder, “What if things don’t work out? What if I stay stuck here forever?”

Building trust in Allah takes time. It starts with small steps, like reminding yourself that He loves you and wants the best for you. Over time, as you see how Allah’s plan unfolds, your trust grows more substantial. The key is to hold on, even when everything is falling apart. Trust is not about understanding everything now but believing that Allah knows best, even when you don’t. Our beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “And the disbelievers planned, but Allah planned. And Allah is the best of planners.”

The Dots Always Connect:

Looking back at your life, have you ever noticed how things worked out in ways you didn’t expect? Maybe a situation that felt like a disaster was a blessing. This is Allah’s way of connecting the dots. In the moment of pain, the world is against us. When things fall apart, we cry, “Why me?”.  It’s hard to believe that something good could come from our suffering. We feel lost, like everything is slipping away, and it’s easy to think that life has been unfair to us. But the same moments that broke us begin to make sense as time passes. The heartbreak that shattered us teaches us resilience. The failure we feared shapes us into someone stronger. We start to see how those painful experiences led us to something better.

Allah’s plan is like a puzzle. Each piece has its place, no matter how confusing or painful. One day, looking back, we see how the dots connected perfectly. What felt like a setback was a step forward. In these moments, we realize that Allah’s plans are always better than ours.

The dots don’t connect immediately, but they eventually do. And that’s the beauty of trusting Allah. He always has a plan, even when we can’t see it.

It Only Takes One Step to Return:

Sometimes, when life gets tough, we drift away from Allah. We feel ashamed like we’ve strayed too far to return. But the truth is, no matter how far you’ve gone, it only takes one step to return to Him.  Allah is Al-Rahman (The Most Merciful) and Al-Ghaffar (The Forgiving). He loves when we turn to Him, no matter how broken we feel. When life feels overwhelming, nothing is more comforting than talking to Allah. You don’t need fancy words or a perfect du’a. You need sincerity. Sometimes, all you can do is cry, and that’s okay. Allah listens to everything, even the thoughts and feelings you can’t express. When no one else understands, He does. When you feel like no one is listening, He is. The best part is that you can talk to Him anytime, anywhere. He is always there, waiting for you to turn to Him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Remember Allah in times of ease, and He will remember you in times of difficulty. (At-Tirmidhi)

The Greatest Sacrifice: Devotion

In a world of distractions, staying devoted to Allah is difficult. It requires sacrifice, letting go of specific desires, and trusting Allah’s plan over your own. But this sacrifice is worth it. Every small act of devotion, whether a prayer, a kind word, or a moment of patience, brings you closer to Allah. True devotion is about trusting Allah, even when life doesn’t make sense. It’s about believing that every trial is an opportunity to grow and that every hardship leads you to something better. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Truly, my prayer and my service of sacrifice, and my living and my dying are for Allah (alone), the Sustainer of all the worlds, in Whose Divinity none has a share.”

The Beauty of Tawakkul:

Life’s detours can be confusing and painful but never meaningless. Allah is the best planner, and everything He does has a purpose. Trusting Him isn’t always easy, but it’s the key to finding peace. Remember that this is just a chapter in your story if you’re going through a difficult time. The pain you feel now will lead to something greater. Be patient, keep your faith, and talk to Allah. He hears every prayer, and He’s always there for you. And one day, you’ll see how the dots connect when you look back.  You’ll realize that every detour was part of Allah’s beautiful plan for you. All you need is tawakkul—complete trust in Him.

Allah mentions in the blessed Quran, “And rely upon Allah; and sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.” (Surah AhazabAyat 3). Life often presents us with significant decisions that impact our future. Implementing Tawakkul in such scenarios involves exerting our best efforts in the decision-making process, including gathering information, consulting experts, and meticulous planning. After doing all we can, it is essential to release any anxiety and entrust the outcome to Allah.
