Discusses transportation, judicial infrastructure, tax concerns, says chief minister assured to visit Lal Chowk in January
SRINAGAR: Traders Association Lal Chowk president, Mohammad Iqbal Khan on Thursday led a productive meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday in a significant move towards fostering the growth of the vital commercial hub in Srinagar.
According to a statement issued by the association, the delegation comprised notable representatives, including Tahir Ahmad Bawan, Arif Ahmad Zarqoob, Mohammad Yunus Thakur, Surjeet Singh Pal Rattan, and Mohammad Saleem Bhat, all of whom contributed to a robust discussion aimed at addressing essential areas for development.
The discussions centered around several key initiatives vital for Lal Chowk’s prosperity. One of the primary focuses was on enhancing transportation infrastructure to facilitate sustainable economic growth and improve accessibility within the area. Recognizing the importance of efficient transport links, the delegation highlighted the need for a comprehensive transportation system that would cater to the needs of traders and patrons alike, the association said.
Revitalizing the court complex was another significant topic, with the delegation stressing that strengthening judicial infrastructure is crucial for ensuring timely justice in the community. The need to upgrade Court Road was emphasized, particularly concerning improvements in lighting, drainage systems, and overall road conditions to enhance public convenience.
The completion of the ongoing Smart City project was also a focal point of the discussions, as the team asserted its importance in boosting urban development efforts. Part of this initiative includes transforming the Lala Rukh yard into a modern Smart City Bus Station, a move identified as a priority to improve transportation facilities.
Furthermore, the Traders Association raised concerns regarding the recent hike in trade taxes, which saw an unprecedented increase from Rs 1,200 to Rs 7,000. “This abrupt change, implemented without prior stakeholder consultation, led to calls for immediate dialogue aimed at establishing a fair tax determination process that considers the impacts on local businesses,” the statement said.
The association said the chief minister responded positively to the discussions, expressing full commitment to the proposed initiatives. The CM, it said, assured the delegation of his plans to visit Lal Chowk in January 2025 to personally oversee progress and address the concerns raised during this important meeting.
