Police intensify crackdown on drug peddlers; multiple arrests made, contraband seized

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police have intensified their efforts to curb the menace of drug abuse and trafficking, with several operations leading to arrests, seizures of contraband substances, and vehicles linked to the illegal narcotics trade across the region.
Drug peddler arrested in Srinagar
In Srinagar, a police team from Police Station Nowhatta apprehended a suspected individual during a naka checking near Islamia College. The accused, identified as Haris Farooq, son of Farooq Ahmad, resident of Hakabazar Badamwari, was found in possession of SpasmoProxyvon capsules. A case under FIR No. 56/2024 has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
Vehicle seized from drug peddlers in Srinagar
In another Srinagar operation, police seized a vehicle—bearing registration number JK01J-7081—that was acquired using proceeds from illegal narcotics trade. The vehicle was linked to two arrested drug peddlers, Asif Ahmad Sheikh and Arif Ahmad Sheikh, both residents of Babapora Barthana, booked under FIR No. 136/2024 at Police Station Parimpora.
During financial investigations, it was found that the vehicle was procured through proceeds of drug trafficking, and the seizure was made under the provisions of Section 68 of the NDPS Act.
Arrests, contraband recovery in Awantipora
In Awantipora, police arrested a drug peddler, identified as Sahil Rashid Parray, resident of Jawbara, at a checkpoint near Kaigam Crossing. During the search, 23 grams of cannabis-like substance was recovered. A case under FIR No. 171/2024 has been registered, and further investigation is ongoing.
Additionally, two notorious drug peddlers, Yawar Yousuf Sofi of Kadlabal Pampore and Feroze Ahmad Chopan of Larow Jagir Tral, were detained under the PIT NDPS Act. The individuals, involved in supplying drugs to youth in Pampore, Tral, and adjoining areas, have been lodged at Central Jail Kot-Balwal, Jammu.
Drug peddler detained under PIT NDPS Act in Handwara
In Handwara, police detained Manzoor Ahmad Shah, a resident of Gund Moomin, under the PIT NDPS Act. Shah is a key member of a drug trafficking syndicate and has been involved in multiple criminal cases, including FIR No. 266/2020 at Police Station Kupwara and FIR No. 15/2024 at Police Station Vilgam. Despite prior arrests, his persistent engagement in illicit activities necessitated the detention order under Section 3 of the PIT NDPS Act.
Police commitment to eradicating drug menace
J&K Police have urged the public to cooperate in identifying and reporting drug-related activities, emphasizing their unwavering commitment to eradicating the drug menace. Citizens have been encouraged to report such crimes to the nearest police establishment or dial 112.
These consistent actions, including arrests, seizures, and proactive measures, reflect the police’s dedication to safeguarding youth and ensuring a drug-free society.
