Delay in reservation policy review: Er Ehtisham seeks clarity from govt

Must read

SRINAGAR: “The government’s recent announcement to constitute a subcommittee for reviewing the controversial reservation policy was met with cautious optimism by students, professionals, and open merit candidates who have long felt marginalized. However, more than a week later, no formal order or notification regarding the subcommittee has been made public, leading to confusion and skepticism about the government’s commitment to addressing this pressing issue,” Er Ehtisham Khan, a prominent social and student rights activist and Co-founder of The Purpose NGO, said on Monday.
In a statement issued here, Khan expressed deep concern over this delay and its implications. Known for his relentless advocacy for fair and equitable policies, Er Ehtisham had initially welcomed the announcement as a potential breakthrough. Still, the absence of transparency has raised serious doubts about the seriousness of the government’s intent.
He remarked, “The announcement of the subcommittee gave hope to thousands who have been anxiously waiting for justice under a rationalized reservation system. Yet, the lack of a formal order or public notification is both puzzling and disappointing. This delay has created unnecessary ambiguity, leaving stakeholders in a state of uncertainty.”
The open merit candidates, who constitute a significant demographic affected by the current reservation structure, were optimistic that the government would address their grievances promptly. The delay, however, has reignited fears that political inertia could overshadow the urgency of the issue, he said.
Er Khan further added, “More than a week has passed since the announcement, but we are yet to see any concrete steps or official documents. If the subcommittee has indeed been formed, the government owes it to the public to issue a proper and transparent order outlining its members, terms of reference, and timeline. This silence is deeply troubling.”
He said the current reservation policy has faced widespread criticism for creating inequities and undermining the principles of merit and equal opportunity. The recent decision to form a subcommittee was viewed as a potential turning point, but the absence of action threatens to derail this initiative, he said.
Addressing the broader implications, Er Ehtisham said, “Open merit candidates have already endured significant disadvantages under the current policy. Further delays in addressing their legitimate concerns will only erode trust in the government’s promises and fuel frustration among the youth.”
He called on the Chief Minister and legislators from all political parties to take immediate and collective action. “This is not just a political issue; it’s about fairness and justice for an entire section of society,” he said.
