Tesla cars banned in China’s World University games due to Xi Jinping visit

Must read

Beijing: Tesla Inc. vehicles are prohibited from a few parts of the Chinese city of Chengdu as President Xi Jinping would be visiting the city to mark the beginning of the World University Games on Friday according to Bloomberg.
Teslas have been restricted from entering certain Chinese military complexes and housing compounds in recent years as there are concerns about sensitive data being collected by cameras which are built into the vehicles. Though the CEO Elon Musk has vowed to follow local data rules, suspicions from local authorities continue.
According to Bloomberg, a video was circulated on social media of a Tesla car being denied to enter a certain venue in Chengdu. A traffic official told the driver of the vehicle he was following the orders. However, the clip is no longer available.
Xi will attend the opening ceremony along with other leaders including Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo. The summer version of the tournament last took place in Naples in Italy in 2019. They were postponed in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Twenty per cent of the world’s university students are in China, and the national university sports federation has a clear and proven capability of holding student sports events of the very highest quality, even at relatively short notice,” said FISU President Oleg Matytsin.
The Indian contingent will be competing in 12 sporting events in the tournament. Jyothi Yarraji, Manu Bhaker and Aishwarya Pratap Singh are among some of the renowned names from India to take part in the competition.
