Avoid keeping high-intensity Kangri close to body, it causes cancer: Dr Abid Saleem

PAMPORE: A first-of-its-kind cancer surgery was performed at Sub District Hospital Keller in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Monday.
The surgery was conducted on a 75-year-old patient with squamous cell carcinoma of the thigh.
The patient, a resident of the Keller area of Shopian, is doing well and has been shifted to the post-operative ward in stable condition.
The surgery was performed by plastic surgeon Dr Abid Saleem, Dr Abid Saleem, Dr Hilal Ahmad and the theatre staff team. The logistic support was provided by BMO Keller.
BMO Keller appreciated the team of doctors for performing cancer surgery in the SDH Keller, officials told Kashmir Reader.
Dr Abid Saleem told Kashmir Reader that an aged person with a case of Ulcero-proliferative lesions of the right thigh with USG documented right groin Lymphadenopathy reported at SDH Keller two weeks ago. After baseline investigation and other tests, it proved to be squamous cell carcinoma.
He added that the patient was presented to surgical OPD. “After evaluating the patient, Anaesthesia clearances were sought and the patient was taken today under high risk,” he said, adding that wide local excision of multiple SCC’s right thigh with en block right groin dissection was done under spinal anesthesia.
The doctor said such cancers are triggered by using high-intensity Kangri (firepot) in close contact with body skin, especially the thighs and lower abdomen region.
He said that prolonged use of Kangri causes lesions that ultimately turn cancerous. He advised for keeping Kangri away from body parts to protect from such cancers.
Block Medical Officer Keller and other medical staff members congratulated the doctors for performing this surgery which is usually done at tertiary-level hospitals in Kashmir.
