SHOPIAN: Jammu and Kashmir Sqay Association in collaboration with Sqay Federation of India, the premier national governing body for the traditional martial art of Kashmir Sqay in India, proudly organized a remarkable sports event in Shopian to celebrate the International Olympic Day. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from athletes, spectators, and sports enthusiasts, showcasing the true spirit of sportsmanship.
The International Olympic Day, celebrated annually on June 23rd, commemorates the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and promotes the values of the Olympic Movement, including excellence, friendship, and respect. In line with this global celebration, the Sqay Federation of India aimed to raise awareness about the importance of sports and physical activity for a healthy and active lifestyle.
The event held in Shopian, a picturesque city in India, showcased the rich heritage and athletic prowess of Sqay. The day began with a grand inauguration ceremony, graced by prominent local dignitaries, officials from the Sqay Federation of India, and esteemed guests. The ceremonial lighting of the Olympic torch set the stage for an exhilarating day filled with competitive spirit and camaraderie.
Athletes from various parts of the region, including seasoned practitioners and aspiring youngsters, participated in a series of Sqay demonstrations, competitions, and friendly matches. Speaking at the event, Mr. Basharat Rasool Mir, President of Sqay Federation of India, expressed his delight at the successful organization of the International Olympic Day event. He said, “Sqay is deeply rooted in our cultural heritage and has a long history of promoting discipline, self-defense, and physical fitness. By organizing this event, we aim to popularize this traditional martial art and inspire young athletes to pursue excellence in sports.”
