The advent of social media has revolutionized the field of journalism, providing new avenues for information dissemination and global connectivity. However, alongside these advancements, the ethical values of journalism have suffered a significant blow. In particular, the prevalence of sensationalism and the proliferation of hoaxes for the sake of garnering views and engagement on social media platforms have undermined the core principles of responsible reporting and truth-seeking. The emphasis on clickbait headlines and sensationalized stories has transformed social media journalism into a mere entertainment-driven landscape. in order to capture the fleeting attention of users scrolling through their feeds, news outlets and individuals often resort to exaggerated claims and provocative language. This prioritization of attracting views and engagement over-delivering factual and well-researched news undermines the credibility of journalism as a whole.
Social media journalism is the rise of “influencer journalism” or “citizen journalism.” while citizen journalism can be a powerful tool for uncovering stories that may otherwise be overlooked, it often lacks the necessary training, editorial oversight, and commitment to ethical guidelines that professional journalism adheres to. it is ultimately leading to confusion and further erosion of trust in journalism.
The Rise of Sensationalism: A Distortion of Reality
In the digital age, social media journalists face immense pressure to capture the attention of audiences amidst the overwhelming flow of information. To stand out and gain traction, some journalists resort to sensationalism—a practice that involves exaggerating or distorting news stories to generate shock, awe, or entertainment.
