TRINIDAD: Rain disrupted play on the opening day of the first Test between Pakistan and the West Indies at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad, bringing an early end to the day’s action.
After winning the toss, the West Indies chose to bat first and reached 23 for one before persistent rain forced players off the field.
Pakistan made an early breakthrough when fast bowler Mohammad Abbas dismissed opener Brandon King for 12, bowling him after he had faced 28 deliveries. The hosts had lost their first wicket with the score on 13.
At the toss, Pakistan captain Babar Azam said his side would also have elected to bat first had it won the toss.
The match also featured the Test debut of Pakistan’s 33-year-old left-arm spinner Ali Usman, who made his maiden appearance in the longest format of international cricket.
