SRINAGAR: Jammu & Kashmir Power Development Department (PDD) has achieved a major milestone by securing the 2nd position (First Runner-Up) nationwide for May 2026 in RTS Applications, Installations, and Inspections under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. The award was presented by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) during the “2 years of PM Surya Ghar” event in New Delhi. Mahmood Ahmad Shah, Managing Director of Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited, received the award on behalf of Jammu & Kashmir.
This recognition highlights the collective efforts of the J&K PDD, DISCOMs (KPDCL & JPDCL), field staff, district administrations, vendors, and consumers in advancing the scheme’s goals across the Union Territory. The flagship scheme aims to provide rooftop solar systems to one crore households nationwide from April 2024 to March 2027. So far, the scheme has achieved significant progress with over 33.57 lakh installations across India.
In Jammu & Kashmir, implementation began in July 2024, and rooftop solar adoption has steadily increased since then. Public awareness and attractive financial incentives have driven this growth. Currently, 98,601 applications have been registered on the national portal—29,402 in Jammu and 69,184 in Kashmir. Of these, 33,987 installations have been successfully commissioned, including 12,730 in Jammu and 21,255 in Kashmir. This has added 121.61 MW of renewable energy capacity in the UT, with 44.68 MW from JPDCL and 76.92 MW from KPDCL, reducing reliance on conventional power sources and promoting sustainable energy at the consumer level.
The central government has disbursed ₹258.18 crore as direct subsidy (CFA) to beneficiaries, along with an additional ₹10 crore from the UT. The scheme also features low-interest bank loans, with J&K Bank supporting most of the financing. Out of 45,321 loan applications received, 27,075 have been sanctioned and disbursed, with over 80% of installations financed through these loans.
Vendor participation has grown substantially, with over 300 active vendors registered in Jammu & Kashmir on the national portal, competing with over 600 nationally. This ecosystem fosters employment and entrepreneurship in the renewable energy sector.
In May 2026 alone, 4,559 new applications were registered, 2,579 solar systems installed, and 2,688 DISCOM inspections completed to facilitate timely subsidy processing. The scheme has seen a 77% increase in rooftop installations since May 2025, reflecting growing public confidence and adoption of green energy.
The J&K PDD expressed gratitude to MNRE for recognizing their efforts and reaffirmed its commitment to the successful implementation of the scheme, aligned with national goals of promoting clean, affordable, and sustainable energy.
