Police intensify crackdown on narcotics

Srinagar: In a concerted effort to combat the rising menace of drug trafficking and substance abuse across Jammu and Kashmir, police agencies have launched a series of operations, arrests, and awareness initiatives under the banner of the Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan. These ongoing activities aim to dismantle the drug ecosystem, safeguard youth, and promote a healthier, drug-free society.
Major Arrests and Seizures in Awantipora and Anantnag
Continuing its relentless drive against drug peddlers, Jammu and Kashmir police arrested three individuals involved in narcotics trade and recovered substantial contraband substances from their possession.
In Awantipora, police personnel from Police Post Aripal intercepted two suspicious persons during a naka at Darganiegund. A thorough search revealed 1.89 kilograms of cannabis-like substance in their possession. The accused have been identified as Bashir Ahmad Ganie, son of Gh. Qadir Ganie, resident of Dar Gani Gund, and Mohd Yousef Ganie, son of Gh. Mohd Ganie, resident of Yangwani Aripal. Both have been taken into custody and are currently detained at the police station, with further investigations underway.
Meanwhile, in Anantnag, a police team from Police Station Bijbehara stopped a suspect at Tulkhan Crossing. During a frisk, officers found 102 grams of charas concealed in sticks wrapped in corn husk. The accused, identified as Ab Gani Sofi, son of Mohammad Rajab Sofi, a resident of Sethar Sangam, was arrested on the spot. Cases under relevant narcotics laws have been registered against the individuals, and investigations are ongoing to unearth further links and networks involved in illegal drug trade.
Police officials reaffirmed their commitment to eradicate narcotics from society, emphasizing that sustained efforts are crucial in making Jammu and Kashmir a safer, drug-free zone.
Community Outreach and Awareness Initiatives
Alongside enforcement actions, police have ramped up community engagement through awareness programs aimed at preventing drug use among youth and educating residents about the dangers of narcotics.
In Baramulla and Awantipora, police organized various events to promote a healthy lifestyle and discourage drug abuse. In Chandoosa, Police Station collaborated with Government Higher Secondary School Kachu to organize a Mini Marathon that saw active participation from students and staff. Participants raised slogans advocating for a drug-free society and emphasized the importance of staying away from harmful substances.
Additionally, a Drug Awareness Programme was held at Government High School Nagbal, where teachers, students, and local residents discussed the social and psychological impacts of drug addiction. Speakers stressed the collective responsibility of society in eradicating drugs and supporting affected individuals.
In Awantipora, police teamed up with religious leaders and respected community figures to conduct awareness sessions. These gatherings aimed to sensitize the public about the harmful effects of drugs and the importance of community-driven efforts in combating the menace. Participants pledged their support for ongoing anti-drug campaigns, reinforcing the message that collective vigilance is essential for success.
