Srinagar: In a robust effort to combat the growing menace of narcotics in Jammu and Kashmir, police authorities across North Kashmir and Anantnag have launched multiple coordinated operations resulting in significant seizures, arrests, and destruction of illegal drug cultivation sites. These actions are part of the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan, aimed at eradicating drug trafficking and raising awareness about the dangers of substance abuse.
In North Kashmir’s Baramulla district, police conducted a targeted raid based on specific intelligence about illegal storage of narcotics. Acting swiftly, Police Post Wagoora registered FIR No. 47/2026 at Kreeri police station and launched an investigation. During the operation, police recovered approximately 5.8 kilograms of illicit poppy from an orchard at Nowpora Jagir, belonging to Gh. Mohi-Ud-Din Dar, who is the son-in-law of Gh. Mohammad Dar. The poppy was seized in the presence of an Executive Magistrate and officials from the Agriculture Department, underscoring the seriousness of the operation. The arrest and seizure mark a significant strike against the illegal narcotics trade in the region, with further investigations underway.
Meanwhile, in Sopore, police launched an anti-poppy cultivation drive following credible intelligence about illegal poppy farming in village Reban, falling under Police Post Fruit Mandi. FIR No. 112/2026 was registered, and a joint team comprising police, excise, agriculture, and revenue officials conducted a coordinated raid. During the operation, the illegally cultivated poppy was identified and destroyed on the spot after completing all legal formalities. The team also collected samples of the crop for further examination, signaling their firm resolve to dismantle narcotics networks at the grassroots level. Authorities reiterated that under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, strict legal action would continue against those involved in cultivation, possession, or trafficking of narcotics.
In Anantnag district, police carried out simultaneous Narco Cordon and Search Operations at 20 strategic locations across the district. These operations targeted drug kingpins, peddlers, and their associates, with the goal of disrupting supply chains and identifying individuals providing logistical or financial support to narcotics networks. The operations, supervised by senior police officials and supported by specially trained K9 units, were based on detailed intelligence gathered from ongoing investigations. This large-scale crackdown demonstrates the authorities’ unwavering commitment to eradicate the drug menace and ensure a safer society.
Similarly, in Pulwama district, police arrested a suspected drug peddler during routine naka checks at Frasipora Link Road. The individual, identified as Mukhtar Ahmad Rather, was found in possession of approximately 5.9 kilograms of poppy straw concealed in a nylon bag. The arrest was made under FIR No. 82/2026, and further investigations are underway. Concurrently, police in Rajpora conducted house searches targeting suspected drug peddlers and their networks, aiming to dismantle local narcotics operations and maintain strict vigilance over drug-related activities.
Beyond enforcement, police are actively working to spread awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. In Awantipora, a drug awareness programme was organized at Ladhoo Market, where members of the local community, shopkeepers, youth, and residents participated actively. The programme focused on educating the public about the social, health, and legal consequences of substance abuse. Participants were urged to cooperate with police by sharing information about illegal activities and to help build a drug-free community.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to rooting out the drug menace from society and appealed to the public to remain vigilant and supportive. They emphasized that eradicating narcotics requires a collective effort and solicited cooperation in sharing credible information to assist ongoing investigations and operations.
These comprehensive efforts highlight the seriousness with which J&K police are tackling drug-related issues, aiming to create a safer, healthier, and drug-free environment for all residents of the region.
