PSVs without fitness certificates
JAMMU: The Traffic Police Rural Jammu has taken strict action against three drivers of Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) for operating their vehicles without the mandatory fitness certificates, posing a serious risk to passenger and pedestrian safety. During routine inspections at TCP Surankote, officers found that these drivers continued to operate despite being challaned and warned multiple times in the past for similar violations.
Acting swiftly, police seized all three PSVs on the spot and registered FIR No. 111/2026 under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, citing rash and negligent driving and endangering public safety. Authorities highlighted that the vehicles were being driven without meeting prescribed safety and fitness standards, which is especially hazardous on the region’s hilly roads. The details of the seized vehicles and involved drivers are as follows:
1. Vehicle: XYLO (JK20-0290)
Driver: Iftikhar Ahmed, son of Aftar Hussain, resident of Gurai Mendhar, Poonch
History: Challaned 54 times
2. Vehicle: SUMO (JK11-9819)
Driver: Javid Iqbal, son of Mohd Rashid, resident of Gunthal, Surankote, Poonch
History: Challaned 5 times
3. Vehicle: Tempo (JK11-4177)
Driver: Sheraz Ahmed, son of Mir Mohd, resident of Kallar Kattel, Surankote, Poonch
History: Challaned 10 times
Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic Rural Jammu), Farooq Qaiser, stated that the matter will be referred to the concerned authorities for the cancellation of the vehicles’ registration certificates and the drivers’ licenses. He warned that mechanically unfit vehicles are a grave threat to public safety and emphasized that strict enforcement will continue to ensure compliance with safety standards. He urged all vehicle owners and drivers to adhere to fitness and safety regulations to prevent such violations.
