O’Brien alleges ‘coordinated targeting’ of Mamata Banerjee by Centre, agencies

KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien on Tuesday intensified his attack on the Centre and several institutions, alleging a concerted attempt to target West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
In a strongly worded social media post, O’Brien said, “All gang up against one woman,” naming Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Defence Minister, multiple Chief Ministers, and central agencies as part of what he described as a coordinated effort.
He also cited institutions such as the Enforcement Directorate, Central Bureau of Investigation, National Investigation Agency, and the Election Commission of India, along with the deployment of “2,400 platoons of CAPF,” alleging that all were being used against Banerjee.
The remarks come amid heightened political tensions between the ruling All India Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, particularly during election periods, when issues such as law enforcement actions, central force deployments, and the role of constitutional bodies often emerge as flashpoints.
The BJP has consistently denied such allegations, maintaining that central agencies function independently and that security deployments are carried out in line with directives issued by the Election Commission to ensure free and fair elections.
