BHOPAL: Asserting that the Union government is truly implementing the ‘Jai Jawan–Jai Kisan’ slogan, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said that the use of millets is being promoted in the armed forces to economically strengthen farmers.
Singh made the remarks after inaugurating the three-day ‘Unnat Krishi Mahotsav’ in Raisen, Madhya Pradesh.
He said that flours made from jowar, bajra, and ragi have been introduced for use in the armed forces.
The Defence Minister also informed that the government has decided to procure fruits and vegetables grown through organic farming from farmers living around cantonment areas.
“This means that the produce grown by farmers through organic methods, without chemical fertilisers, will directly reach our soldiers’ plates. You will also benefit, as your produce will fetch better prices,” he said.
The minister added that farmers living around cantonment areas have seen a significant rise in income in recent months, and the initiative is also encouraging organic farming.
He said agriculture holds vast potential and that greater participation by youth will boost innovation, increase farmers’ incomes, and strengthen the country’s economy.
Highlighting the role of technology, he noted that farming can be made smarter through the use of drones, sensors, and mobile technology.
He said the government remains committed to providing all possible support to ensure that farming becomes a matter of pride and that farmers live with dignity and honour.
“A farmer generates employment. He drives industry. He supports services,” Rajnath Singh emphasised.
