‘Had falsely promised brother’s release’

SRINAGAR Police in Shopian have arrested a conman who duped an individual by falsely promising to secure his brother’s release from police custody at Police Station Zainapora.

According to police, a complaint was received via WhatsApp from Asif Ahmad Parrah of Humhuna, Zainapora. He alleged that Sajad Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Mundoora, Tral, fraudulently took ₹5.40 lakh from him by falsely claiming he could secure his brother Umer Maqbool’s release. The complainant’s brother was lawfully arrested in connection with FIR No. 108/2025 under Sections 8/20 of the NDPS Act.

The accused, claiming to be a government employee with influence, exploited the situation and assured the release, duping the complainant out of the money.

Following the complaint, police registered FIR No. 03/2026 under Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

During investigation, ₹1.50 lakh has been recovered from the accused. He has been taken into custody, and efforts are ongoing to recover the remaining amount. Further investigations are underway.

Authorities advise the public to remain vigilant and avoid individuals making false claims of influence or promising illegal favors. Such attempts should be promptly reported to the nearest police station.
