Disallowing peaceful protests undemocratic: G H Mir

Must read

SRINAGAR: Apni Party Senior Vice President Ghulam Hassan Mir on Sunday expressed his dismay over the government’s move to prevent a scheduled sit-in protest by Open Merit students in Srinagar over an unfair reservation quota. Pertinently, police has placed some leaders, who were expected to join the students’ protest, under house arrest, and detained some student leaders as well.

Criticising the government’s move, Ghulam Hassan Mir said in a statement, “Not allowing a sit-in protest by students and some leaders is undemocratic. It is the beauty of democracy that anybody can express their views through peaceful means. The government should have allowed the protest; the heavens would not have fallen.”

“Suffocating voices through the barrel of a gun is totally uncalled for,” Mir added.
