SRINAGAR: In a momentous achievement for Indian sports, Rashid Shafi, a young athlete from a small village in Kupwara, has won the gold medal at the Nordic Wushu International Championship held in Sweden from December 12 to 14. His outstanding performance across three high-level bouts has brought pride to the nation and spotlighted the potential of rural talent in India.

Rashid participated in the tournament representing India and faced formidable opponents from Italy, Bangladesh, and the host country Sweden. He secured his first victory against Italy, followed by a knockout win over Bangladesh in the second bout. In the final, Rashid defeated the Swedish athlete to claim the top position on the podium and bring home the prestigious gold medal.

A dedicated trainee at the Khelo India Wushu Centre in Handwara, Kupwara, Rashid’s success underscores the importance of nurturing talent from rural areas. His journey highlights how proper guidance and support can elevate athletes from small villages to international prominence.

Expressing his gratitude, Rashid Shafi credited the support of officials and coaches who helped him reach this milestone. He extended special thanks to Nuzhat Gul, Secretary of the Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council, for her visionary leadership in transforming sports in Jammu & Kashmir. Additionally, he acknowledged Kuldeep Handoo, Chief Coach of India, and other sports officials for their continuous efforts in advancing Wushu in the region.
