SKUAST–Kashmir, in collaboration with the Red Cross Society of Jammu and Kashmir, celebrated International Volunteers Day on 5th December 2025 at the Faculty of Horticulture, Shalimar. The event highlighted the spirit of volunteerism and the collective responsibility of youth in nation-building. The program was attended by the officers of the University and faculty members including Director Finance Jenab Haroon Ahmad, Registrar Prof. Azmat Alam Khan and Mr. G.A Qureshi, Honorary Secretary, Indian Red Cross Society.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his inspiring address, he quoted the example of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, emphasising that true happiness comes from helping those in need. He urged students to embrace volunteerism as a way of life and contribute meaningfully to society. He appreciated the active involvement of NSS volunteers across the University and emphasised the need to nurture compassion, empathy and a sense of duty among students.
Prof. Raihana Habib Kanth, Dean Faculty of Horticulture and Guest of Honour, motivated the students to contribute in any form—be it physical work, financial support, or emotional care—highlighting that every small act of kindness counts.
The program began with the a warm welcome address by the Prof. S.A. Gangoo, Dean Students Welfare, who highlighted the significance of international volunteers Day in shaping responsible citizens.
The Special Invitee, G. A. Qureshi also addressed the gathering. Mr. Qureshi underscored the vital role played by the Red Cross Society in reaching out to vulnerable sections of society and extending humanitarian assistance during crises.
A first Aid training program was also conducted to equip students with essential life-saving skills. The resource person Dr. Shailendra Kaur demonstrated practical technique for handling emergencies such as bleeding, fracture, burns and unconsciousness.
The program was coordinated by Dr. Seemi Lohani, NSS Programme Officer, whose efforts ensured the smooth and impactful conduct of the event. More than 100 students from the Faculty of Horticulture enthusiastically participated, reflecting their commitment to volunteerism.
