SRINAGAR: Dryland Agriculture Research Station, SKUAST-Kashmir, conducted a one-day input distribution and awareness programme under HADP Project No. 1, titled “Development of Seed and Seed Multiplication Chain under PPP Mode.” The event took place at Chowgam, Kulgam, and benefited 70 farmers from the Kond and Pahloo blocks of Kulgam. Farmers received seeds of the improved wheat variety Shalimar Wheat 2, which is well-suited to the region’s agro-climatic conditions.The programme was organized in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (AEO Office, Chowgam) and was coordinated by Prof. Ajaz A. Lone (Prof. GPB), Dr. Zahida Rashid (Agronomist), and Dr. Seerat un Nissa (Soil Scientist).The event commenced with a warm welcome by Dr. Zahida Rashid, followed by an insightful lecture delivered by Prof. Ajaz A. Lone, who provided farmers with information on varietal development of wheat. He emphasized that this input distribution and awareness initiative is vital for equipping local farmers with high-quality seeds and modern cultivation practices to boost wheat productivity in Kulgam.Through this programme, the focus was on creating awareness about recommended wheat varieties, efficient production practices, and climate-resilient agriculture. The goal is to promote timely sowing, disease management, and the use of certified seeds to ensure better yields and improved livelihoods for farmers.
Dr. Zahida Rashid highlighted the importance of educating farmers on optimal sowing dates, seed handling, fertilizer application timing, and disease control practices to maximize resource efficiency and crop yields. She also stressed that integrating mass media, extension services, and frontline demonstrations can further enhance farmers’ knowledge and adoption of improved wheat cultivation technologies, leading to increased productivity and sustainability.
Dr. Seerat un Nissa discussed the significance of soil test-based fertilizer recommendations and emphasized the use of well-decomposed farmyard manure and vermicompost to enhance soil fertility and crop yields.
The role of officials from the AEO Zone Chowgam was highly appreciated by the farming community for their dedicated efforts in supporting agricultural livelihoods.The programme concluded with a vote of thanks from Prof. Ajaz A. Lone, who expressed gratitude to the Government of J&K and HADP for their financial support. He also commended the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, especially Mr. Mudasir Amin and his team, for their valuable contributions to the success of the event.
