Mirwaiz expresses concern over Middle East escalation, urges peaceful dialogue

SRINAGAR: During Friday prayers at Jama Masjid Srinagar, Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq expressed deep anguish over the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and the broader regional tensions.
Addressing the congregation, he described the situation as “beyond words”, highlighting the tragic loss of life caused by Israeli attacks. “Just yesterday, 92 people, including children, were killed in Gaza as desperate Palestinians seek aid amid a hunger crisis. Even as they gather to receive food, they are bombed and slaughtered—what can be more horrifying and inhuman?” he lamented.
The Mirwaiz also condemned the escalation of violence beyond Gaza, emphasizing that hundreds of Iranian civilians have been killed and thousands injured as Israel’s aggression extends into Iran. He cautioned against the potential involvement of the United States in striking Iran, calling such actions “very painful” for Kashmiris, who share religious and cultural ties with Iran and the Middle East. “The breakdown of the global order deeply affects us all,” he added.
In light of these crises, Dr Umar Farooq appealed for prayers and peaceful dialogue. He urged US President Donald Trump not to escalate tensions further by striking Iran, warning that military action would only lead to more death, destruction, and revenge. “Concerns can be addressed through peaceful engagement rather than military might, which only worsens humanitarian crises—like what we see in Gaza,” he said.
Marking the 61st foundation day of the Awami Action Committee—an organisation founded by “Shaheed-e-Millat”, now recently banned by the Indian government—Mirwaiz reaffirmed the importance of dialogue and holding rulers accountable for good governance. “Though the organisation is banned, our faith in its principles remains strong. Today, when some analysts warn of the possibility of World War III, nations must engage in honest dialogue and rebuild trust to resolve conflicts peacefully,” he said.
The Mirwaiz also highlighted the toll of Kashmir conflict on its people. He expressed concern over the health condition of Hurriyat leader Shabir Shah, who is incarcerated in Tihar Jail. “Reports indicate serious health issues and denial of access to his family for the past two years. His family’s plea for medical bail has been rejected, and they are helpless,” he said.
“The denial of proper medical care violates human rights and dignity. I appeal to the Indian government to ensure immediate medical attention for Shah Sahab and allow his family to be with him in his time of crisis,” he urged. He also called on the elected J&K government to raise this grave issue and provide support.
