Kokernag Sees All-Time High May Temp As Scorching Conditions Show No Signs Of Relenting
Srinagar: Scorching weather conditions show no signs of relenting as Srinagar recorded high of 34.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday, marking the third highest maximum temperature ever recorded in the month of May in the past 133 years for the summer capital. The temperature recorded stands nine degrees above normal for the region.
The previous record for the third-highest May temperature was 34.3 degrees Celsius, logged on May 28, 1971, according to MeT office here. The all-time highest temperature for Srinagar remains 36.4 degrees Celsius, recorded on May 24, 1968.
Kokernag registered 33.3 degrees Celsius, becoming the hottest ever May day for the south Kashmir town since records began in 1978. This temperature surpasses the previous all-time record of 32.6 degrees Celsius, set on May 15, 2001. Qazigund recorded a maximum of 33.5 degrees Celsius, its third-highest May temperature since 1956. However, the highest-ever temperature for the town remains 34 degrees Celsius, recorded in May last year.
In the Jammu region, temperatures were also elevated, with Jammu recording 38.5°C (0.1°C above normal), Katra 36.2°C (0.9°C above normal), Banihal 31.0°C (4.1°C above normal), Bhaderwah 32.1°C (3.9°C above normal), and Batote 29.2°C (2.1°C above normal).
The unprecedented heat in these areas underlines an unusual weather trend gripping the region this summer.
