LONDON: Lionel Messi said that the team must stay united, since they have only been able to win one of their last seven games. After Inter Miami was defeated and lost its place in the top five of the MLS Eastern Conference, Lionel Messi encouraged everyone to support each other. Another loss highlights the problem for Inter Miami, which has allowed 20 goals in its last seven games. The club’s poor defending is worrying, given that next month, they will take part in the Club World Cup in the United States.
Inter Miami’s defensive struggles continue as playoff position weakens
Herons’ defence was weak against Orlando City, and Oscar Ustari was partly to blame for their second goal. Luis Muriel scored first for Orlando in the 43rd minute by running onto a long clearance from the goalkeeper, while Marco Pasalic added a second goal in the 53rd minute after his shot went through Ustari’s hands. Dagur’s last-minute goal finished the match for Iceland.
Lionel Messi explained that it is when things get tough that you can truly learn about a team’s character. According to him, things seem easy when everything runs smoothly. Now is when our teamwork will be put to the test. During hard times, we should unite, encourage one another, and work together to overcome difficulties.
Mascherano acknowledges coaching staff’s responsibility as pressure builds
First-year head coach Javier Mascherano, who took charge at Inter Miami in November 2024, didn’t shy away from accountability following the match. The former Barcelona midfielder acknowledged fundamental issues plaguing the squad that his coaching staff has yet to resolve.
“Unfortunately, we can’t afford the mistakes we make; that’s clear, but it’s pointless for me to come here and tell this story, because it keeps happening,” Javier Mascherano admitted. “Clearly, we as a coaching staff are failing in many of these ways, and we have to try to find a way around them so we don’t continue failing.”
Fans can watch Inter Miami attempt to bounce back when they travel to face FC Cincinnati on Saturday, May 24 at TQL Stadium, with coverage beginning at 7:30 PM ET on Apple TV’s MLS Season Pass.
With no break on the horizon, Inter Miami needs to improve quickly to represent MLS well in the expanded Club World Cup tournament next month.
