During the visit, Dr Farooq presented one month’s basic salary of the MLA for Pahalgam, Altaf Kaloo, to Adil’s father, Hyder Shah, at their residence in Pahalgam. The father of the braveheart expressed his gratitude to Dr Farooq Abdullah and party leaders for their support and solidarity during this difficult time.

Interacting with the local media on the occasion, Dr Farooq emphasized the need to review the Indus Water Treaty, highlighting the water crisis faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir despite the region’s abundant water resources. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir are upheld in regards to water usage.

“We have been advocating for a review of the Indus Water Treaty for a long time. It is essential to address the hardships we are facing due to this treaty. We have the right to our own rivers and should not be deprived of our water resources,” Dr Farooq said.

Meanwhile, the NC chief emphasised the importance of free press, a primary requisite for democracy to thrive.

In his statement on International Press Freedom Day, Dr Farooq highlighted the crucial role of a free press in a functioning democracy. He stated, “A free press is essential for keeping citizens informed and holding those in power accountable. The National Conference’s ‘Naya Kashmir’ manifesto has emphasized the necessity of a free and vibrant press to ensure transparency in governance and to educate the public about their rights.”

Dr Farooq stressed that no society can truly experience the benefits of democracy without ensuring freedom and dignity for the press. He acknowledged the challenges faced by journalists in Kashmir and praised their dedication in upholding the values of their profession despite obstacles.

He paid tribute to journalists who have lost their lives while fulfilling their duties. Dr. Farooq saluted the courage of the journalistic community and urged them to continue their fight for the rights of the people.
