Akhal Village: A Hidden Gem In Kulgam

Must read

With rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, Akhal deserves urgent political attention and infrastructure development to thrive as a vibrant community and tourist destination

Nestled in the heart of nature’s splendour, Akhal Village, located in district Kulgam, is a serene haven that boasts unmatched natural beauty. Surrounded by a lush forest with thick vegetation, this village is a symbol of tranquillity and untouched wilderness.

At the heart of Akhal lies the famed PAPHAAR spring, a serene and sacred site that draws both the faithful and the curious alike. The *ziyarat* of Sufi saint Sheikh Noor-u-Din Noorani adds a layer of spirituality to the already majestic landscape.

Akhal is more than just a picturesque village; it holds within it the essence of cultural and historical richness, making it a true gem of the region. Its serene environment, coupled with the spiritual aura of PAPHAAR, makes it a place of immense potential for both tourism and community growth. Yet, despite its undeniable charm, Akhal has remained largely ignored by political administrations. It is unfortunate that despite its vast potential, successive MLAs have failed to pay adequate attention to the village’s needs.

Had the village received the support and infrastructure it deserves, it could have blossomed into a thriving tourist destination, providing livelihoods for countless unemployed youth and enriching the lives of its residents. Tourism could have created avenues for employment, further highlighted the region’s natural beauty, and ultimately improved the standard of living for the community.

However, despite this oversight, the village has not been without its blessings. The legacy of the late ex-MLA Noorabad, Abdul Aziz Zargar, will forever be etched in the hearts of the people of Akhal. Through his foresight and dedication, he implemented a water-lifting scheme, bringing the pure, life-sustaining waters of the PAPHAAR spring to the village. This remarkable initiative has ensured that the people of Akhal no longer have to worry about access to water, providing a lifeline for all.

Akhal also prides itself on its educated populace, which has produced an impressive number of teachers, doctors, engineers, and even IAS officers who have gone on to serve the nation. The village’s contribution to the educational and professional sectors is a testament to the dedication and hard work of its people, despite the challenges they face.

Yet, the village is not without its struggles. One glaring issue is the absence of a proper playground or recreational space for the youth. Despite the growing enthusiasm and craze for cricket in Kashmir Valley, Akhal lacks basic sports infrastructure. In an era where cricket fields and playgrounds are ubiquitous, Akhal stands in stark contrast with no such facilities for the younger generation. This lack of recreational spaces leaves the youth with fewer healthy distractions, and in the absence of positive engagement, they may sometimes turn to illegal or harmful activities. A simple playground could redirect their energy into sports, teamwork, and personal growth, providing them with a much-needed escape from the pressures they face.

Furthermore, what is even more disheartening is that children in many areas have designated spaces, such as parks, where they can play, learn, and grow, but unfortunately, Akhal has been left behind. A children’s park is more than just a place for play; it is an essential part of a community that fosters physical health, social bonding, and overall well-being. As the village develops, creating a safe and engaging recreational space for children has become the need of the hour.

In a region where the need for political attention and infrastructural development is urgent, it is disheartening to see Akhal left behind. A village with such potential, both in terms of natural resources and human talent, deserves more than mere neglect. It is time for the administration to recognize the true value of Akhal and invest in its growth. By doing so, not only would the village thrive, but it could also set a shining example of how natural beauty, culture, and education can come together to uplift an entire community.

Akhal deserves better. It is time for the authorities to look beyond politics and recognize the immense potential that the village holds, ensuring that its beauty and promise are nurtured for generations to come.
