DAMASCUS: Syrian rebels in control of Damascus have named Mohammed al-Bashir as the head of a transitional government, Syria’s state media reported on Tuesday.
A statement attributed to Bashir on state television’s Telegram channel announced, “The general command has assigned us to lead the transitional government until March 1,” referring to him as “the new Syrian prime minister.”
Rebels led by jihadist HTS took over capital Damascus on Sunday and brought an end to Bashar al-Assad’s rule.
