Er Ehtisham Khan urges swift review of Reservation Policy by J&K Govt

SRINAGAR: In the wake of the Jammu and Kashmir government’s recent decision to form a subcommittee to review its controversial reservation policy, Er Ehtisham Khan, a leading social and student rights activist and co-founder of The Purpose NGO, is raising urgent concerns over delays in the process. The government announced the formation of the subcommittee nearly 20 days ago but has faced criticism for its sluggish pace, particularly from general category students and citizens advocating for a more equitable approach to the reservation system.
Khan in a statement issued here expressed disappointment at the lack of urgency in the government’s response, stating, “The delay in issuing an official order for the subcommittee is frustrating. This only deepens the uncertainty felt by those affected by the policy.” He emphasized that the government’s slow action raises doubts about its commitment to resolving these pressing issues.
Highlighting the importance of both a swift and transparent review process, Khan called for comprehensive stakeholder involvement in the discussions. “It is vital that students, education experts, and representatives from the general category are included in the subcommittee’s considerations. Only through open dialogues can we hope for a balanced and inclusive outcome,” he asserted.
Further urging the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister to honor election promises made to constituents, Khan called for decisive action. “This issue was a cornerstone of your campaign, one that garnered support across the region. It’s essential for the government to act now to restore faith and address the grievances of the general category students and citizens,” he stated.
Khan also voiced his willingness to assist the subcommittee throughout its proceedings. “We are ready to contribute in any way necessary to ensure that this review serves the best interests of all parties involved. The existing reservation policy has caused significant distress, and it’s crucial to resolve this matter efficiently,” he added.
As the subcommittee prepares to undertake its review, Er Ehtisham highlighted the critical nature of this situation, insisting that more delays are unacceptable. “The general category has endured enough hardships under this policy. We expect swift government action that prioritizes merit-based opportunities for those who truly deserve them,” Khan concluded, reiterating the urgent need for transparency and commitment from both the government and the subcommittee members.
