IGP Birdi calls for urgent action against drug trafficking; program aims to enhance law enforcement skills through investigative techniques

SRINAGAR: A two-day training programme focusing on the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was inaugurated today at the Police Control Room (PCR) Kashmir. The event, organized by the Zonal Police Headquarters (ZPHQ) Kashmir in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Jammu & Kashmir, aims to enhance the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies in combating drug trafficking and abuse in the region.
The training programme was officially launched by IGP Kashmir Shri V.K. Birdi, who emphasized the critical importance of strengthening the enforcement of the NDPS Act in addressing the growing menace of drug abuse and illegal narcotics trade in Kashmir. In his inaugural address, Shri Birdi stated, “The growing issue of drug abuse in Kashmir requires urgent and decisive action. This training will not only help our officers better understand the NDPS Act but also equip them with advanced investigative techniques and strategies to effectively combat drug trafficking and abuse.”
Shri Birdi further underlined the need for specialized training for law enforcement officers, which would enhance their awareness of drug-related issues, sharpen their investigative skills, and ultimately strengthen the collective efforts to fight the drug menace in the region. He also highlighted the importance of employing innovative methods and actionable strategies to address the challenge of narcotics in Kashmir.
The programme features sessions on investigative procedures and techniques, led by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) team, headed by Shri Raj Kumar Shah, Superintendent of NCB Jammu. Shri Shah provided detailed insights into the NDPS Act, discussing the legal framework, investigative protocols, and best practices for handling drug-related cases.
The training sessions include interactive discussions, case studies, and practical training aimed at bolstering the capacity of law enforcement personnel to handle narcotics cases effectively. The workshop is expected to improve the ability of officers to investigate and prosecute NDPS-related crimes, providing them with the necessary tools to tackle drug trafficking and abuse at multiple levels.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy by both ZPHQ Kashmir and the NCB to combat the rising tide of drug abuse in the region, particularly among the youth. The two-day workshop is expected to contribute significantly to strengthening the region’s fight against illegal drug trade and ensure a more robust enforcement of the NDPS Act.
This programme is seen as a crucial step toward addressing the drug crisis in Kashmir by equipping officers with the knowledge and skills required to investigate and combat narcotics-related offenses, ultimately working towards a drug-free society in the region.
