SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) has expressed grave concern over the increasing number of road accidents in the region, particularly those involving underage drivers. Terming this trend a “loss of invaluable assets” for the community, the KCCI emphasized the devastating impact on families and the region’s future.
The Chamber in a statement issued here highlighted the distressing loss of young lives, stating that each death represents a significant setback for Kashmir’s social and economic potential. “These young individuals are the future of our region. Losing them is not just a personal tragedy for their families but also a collective loss for the entire community,” a KCCI spokesperson said.
The KCCI pointed out the critical need for accountability regarding minors operating vehicles, including scooters. “Allowing minors to drive reflects a failure in responsibility. Parents, authorities, and society as a whole must address this issue urgently.”
Calling for immediate and strict enforcement of traffic laws, the KCCI urged traffic police authorities to take stringent action against underage drivers. “Traffic enforcement must be uncompromising when it comes to minors operating vehicles. Parents also have a crucial role to play in ensuring their children do not endanger their own lives or the lives of others by driving without a valid license or proper training.”
The KCCI proposed a multi-faceted approach to tackle the issue, including:
– Strengthening traffic enforcement and increasing penalties for violations.
– Enhancing public awareness campaigns about the dangers of underage driving.
– Encouraging community vigilance and prompt reporting of such incidents to authorities.
“It is imperative that we address this issue holistically,” the spokesperson added. “Our collective focus must be on instilling a sense of responsibility in young people and their parents while improving road safety measures. The future of Kashmir’s youth is at stake, and we cannot afford to lose any more lives to preventable accidents.”
