‘AI will be as dangerous for world as nuclear bombs once were’

NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar on Sunday (October 6) said that artificial intelligence (AI) will be a profound factor for the world, after nuclear weapons. He was speaking at the third edition of the Kautilya Economic Conclave.
“AI will be as dangerous for the world as nuclear bombs once were,” he said on its third and final day of the conclave organised by the Institute of Economic Growth and the Finance Ministry.
He added that AI is going to be the next big thing and countries should be prepared to deal with its after-effects.
Explaining the impact of globalisation, Jaishankar said that it is also going to become a profound factor in the global ecosystem and that demographics and connectivity will change the global order.
“Globalisation can be weaponised in the next decade and the world must be cautious about it,” he said.
“Many people around the world blame it for the large number of job losses and other negative effects of the revolution. This issue will remain as long as there is change (globalisation),” he said, noting that the social and political reaction to globalisation has gained momentum in the last decade.
India banking on human-centric AI development
Earlier this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India is striving for a better future through human-centric artificial intelligence (AI) development. He said India is among the first few countries to formulate a national strategy for Al.
“During the G20 Summit hosted in India last year, we emphasised the importance of international governance in the field of AI,” the Prime Minister said, addressing the world leaders at the G7 Outreach Session.
“In the future too, we will continue to work together with all countries to make Al transparent, fair, secure, accessible and responsible,” the PM added.
Based on this strategy, the country launched the Al Mission this year.
