Mirwaiz criticises authorities for placing him under ‘house arrest’

Pays tribute to CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury

SRINAGAR: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has criticised the authorities for placing him under “undeclared and arbitrary house arrest” since September 02, 2024, terming it “undemocratic and illegal” measure.
In a statement, Mirwaiz said his continued detention prevents him from attending Jamia Masjid to deliver the Friday sermon, as well as from participating in his other public engagements.
He expressed deep concern over being barred from an important meeting of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulama (MMU), where critical discussions were held regarding the amendment to the Muslim Waqf Act. He was also prevented from attending a media session with a reputed national media channel to discuss the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the statement said, claiming, “Despite repeated inquiries about his detention, the chief state functionary has consistently denied the existence of such measures.”
Regarding the Waqf amendment issue, Mirwaiz said the MMU has submitted a detailed letter to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), expressing grave concerns and requesting rejection of the proposed amendments. The MMU has also sought a meeting with the JPC to discuss these concerns. He urges people to stay vigilant on this issue, as it affects their religious institutions and existence, and to register their disapproval by signing the petition at https://waqf1.pages.dev/.
Mirwaiz Umar also paid tribute to the communist leader Sitaram Yechury, who passed away in Delhi on Thursday. Expressing his sorrow, Mirwaiz remembered Yechury as a staunch advocate for the human and political rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, and acknowledged the pleasure of meeting and listening to him.
