Over 49,000 Indian students studying in Germany, most in engineering

NEW DELHI: Like last year, Germany recorded the highest number (49,483) of foreign students from India, as per a statement from DAAD – German Academic Exchange Service said. With 15.1 per cent rise within a year, India becomes the largest group of international students enrolled at German universities, surpassing China, according to winter semester 2023-24 data.
A DAAD statement issued in the first week of September said: “The number has more than doubled in the last five years. Indian students now form the largest international community in Germany for the second year in a row.”
As per official statistics, as many as 20,810 Indian students were enrolled in German universities and colleges in 2018-19, which went up to 25,149 in 2019-20. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, Indian students going to Germany continued to see a rise. There were 28,905 Indian students in Germany in 2020-21, 34,134 in 2021-22, 42,997 in the 2022-23, and most recently 49,483 in the 2024-24 winter semester year. The number of Chinese students last year was 39,137 , followed by Syria (15,563), Austria (14,762) and Turkey (14,732).
According to the Germany’s Federal Statistical Office data shared by DAAD, 60 per cent of the students are in the engineering domain. While 21 per cent of the Indian students in Germany are enrolled in law, management and social studies, 13 per cent are in mathematics and natural sciences and five per cent have registered in other courses, as per subject-wise enrolment.
Enrollment according to the type of higher education institutions, 56 per cent of the students are in universities and 44 per cent of the students are in the universities of applied sciences.
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers a variety of scholarships for Indian students and researchers. Beyond institutional support, the Exchange Service promotes the “bi-directional movement” of scholars between Germany and India, encouraging academic exchange and collaboration between the two countries.
