SRINAGAR: The Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), the leading representative body of Islamic groups, Ulemas, and religious institutions in Jammu and Kashmir, under the leadership of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has expressed strong opposition to the proposed amendments to the Waqf Act. The MMU has stated that these amendments are against the interests of the Muslim community and urged for their rejection.
In a joint letter addressed to the Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), Shri Jagdambika Pal, the MMU called for the rejection of the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024. The MMU stressed the importance of engaging in meaningful dialogue with the Muslim community to address their concerns and suggestions, rather than pushing through the amendments.
The MMU voiced concerns that the Muslim majority community of Jammu and Kashmir views these amendments as an attempt to undermine their religious freedom and the autonomy of their institutions. The letter further warned that if the amendments are not rejected, there will be strong protests from the Muslim community, as they perceive this as an attack on their religious institutions.
The MMU has also requested a formal meeting with the committee to discuss the matter in more detail.
The MMU represents various significant religious organizations in Jammu and Kashmir, including Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid, Muslim Personal Law Board, Darul Uloom Rahimiyah Bandipora, Anjuman Shari Shian, Jamiat Ahle Hadith, Jamat-i-Islami, and many others, all of which have united to oppose the amendments.
The MMU has urged Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir to register their rejection of the proposed Waqf Act amendments via the link: https://waqfbill2024.com .
