SRINAGAR: Er Ehtisham Khan, a well-known social and student rights activist, continues to lead a determined campaign against the recent amendment to the J&K Reservation Act. Khan has been at the forefront of this movement, actively working from day one to raise awareness about the policy’s “flaws” and its “adverse effects” on the general category population in the region.
“From the moment this amendment was introduced, I recognized its potential to disrupt the already delicate balance of opportunities in Jammu & Kashmir,” Khan said in a statement. “Our region is unique, with limited private sector opportunities and scarce resources. This policy, instead of uplifting the disadvantaged, risks further marginalizing a significant portion of our population that also needs fair representation.”
In his latest efforts, Khan has formally approached the Home Minister of India, along with his deputies and the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, urging them to reconsider the policy. “I have taken this issue to the highest levels, hoping to draw attention to the pressing need for a fair and balanced reservation system that truly reflects the demographics of our region,” he added.
Khan’s advocacy also includes reaching out to top political figures and leaders across various parties, seeking their support in amplifying the voices of those affected by the policy. “I’ve approached several key leaders, expressing my gratitude for their recent statements on the issue and urging them to lend their influence to our cause. The support from these leaders is crucial, and I remain hopeful that they will champion our cause at the highest levels.”
He emphasized that his advocacy is not against any community but a call for justice and equitable distribution of opportunities. “We are not against the upliftment of any group; our fight is for a balanced and fair reservation system that reflects the actual demographics of our region. The general category, despite being the majority, has been allocated a minimal share in reservations, which is a glaring injustice.”
Khan’s unwavering dedication to this cause has also involved leveraging media platforms to ensure the issue remains in the public eye. His recent interactions with leading news outlets have been instrumental in bringing broader attention to the concerns of those he represents. “I’ve consistently voiced the concerns of the general category, highlighting how this amendment could lead to further economic and social disparities. The media has played a vital role in spreading this message, and I am committed to continuing this dialogue until we see a reversal of this policy.”
Er Khan has called on all stakeholders to unite in this struggle. “This is not just my fight; it’s a collective effort. I urge everyone to join hands, raise their voices, and demand what is rightfully ours. Together, we can ensure that the policies governing our future are just and inclusive.”
