Discover The Uncharted: Kapran–Pogul Paristan Trek

Explore Kashmir’s scenic beauty and rich cultural heritage on a thrilling adventure trek

Adventure tourism is gaining momentum as Kashmir experiences a significant surge in tourist arrivals. To cater to this growing demand, it is imperative to explore new areas for tourism development, including trekking routes. Kashmir offers a diverse range of tourism products. The traditional routes connecting side valleys with the valley remain largely unexplored. There is a pressing need to fully explore and develop these routes, unlocking the region’s vast potential for tourism growth and providing unique experiences for adventure seekers.
“The Kapran (Anantnag) – Pogul Paristan (Ramban) route is a traditional pathway that connects two regions, boasting immense potential for trekking and tourism development. This scenic route is known for its breathtaking beauty and challenging terrain, making it an ideal destination for adventure enthusiasts. By developing this route, we can showcase the region’s natural splendour and rich cultural heritage, providing a unique experience for trekkers and travellers alike.
On our recent trek from Dedibal Kapran to Pogul Paristan via Nandmarg, we embarked on an unforgettable journey. Starting at 9 am, we braved the challenging terrain and unpredictable weather, reaching Nandmarg at 6 pm. The trek was gruelling, with a relentless rain shower that lasted for an hour, making the trail slippery and treacherous. The biting cold added to the difficulty, but the breathtaking scenery and sense of accomplishment made it all worthwhile. Despite the challenges, the stunning vistas and the thrill of adventure left us with an indelible mark, making this trek an experience to cherish forever.
Upon arriving at the breathtaking Nandmarg meadow, a picturesque gateway connecting Anantnag to Ramban, we were treated to a fascinating spectacle. A tribal marriage procession emerged, with the groom, hailing from Kapran, Anantnag, leading the way alongside his entourage. The sight was further embellished by horses, majestically carrying the party towards Pogul Paristan. The next day, the procession returned, this time with the bride, traversing the same scenic route. The vibrant colours and joyful atmosphere of the procession perfectly complemented the natural beauty of Nandmarg, creating an unforgettable experience.
As the sun began to set, we decided to set up camp in the picturesque meadow, surrounded by the gentle hum of sheep and the warm hospitality of the shepherds. They kindly offered us refreshing Noon chai, which we savoured as we settled into our tents. After a hearty dinner, we retired to our cosy tents, only to be awakened by the sound of bear footsteps thrice during the night. Fortunately, the loyal shepherd dogs chased the bear away, and we slept soundly. The next morning, we were treated to delicious Noon chai, expertly prepared by our shepherd friends. With renewed energy, we tackled the majestic Hansraj Peak, the second-highest peak in the Pir Panchal range, and revelled in the breathtaking views from the summit.
As the sun reached its peak, we prepared a satisfying lunch, packed up our tents, and began our descent down the mountain. The initial hour was rocky and challenging, but we persisted, and the subsequent five hours of continuous descent finally led us to a welcoming road. We boarded a bus for the short 4-5 km journey to Pogul, where we searched for a suitable plain area to set up camp. However, the hilly terrain made it difficult to find a suitable spot. What unfolded next was a testament to the extraordinary hospitality of the Pogul community. The locals refused to let us stay in our tents; instead, they offered us the warmth of their homes. One kind-hearted gentleman took us under his wing, and the entire village embraced us with open arms. Despite our exhaustion, we couldn’t resist the selfless love and generosity of the villagers. The next morning, after a nourishing breakfast, we bid farewell and continued our journey by bus, reaching Banihal by 11 am and eventually returning home. The tour was nothing short of mesmerizing, a true testament to the beauty of nature and the kindness of strangers.
As popular destinations in Kashmir face overcrowding, travellers are increasingly seeking out lesser-known areas with immense tourism potential. This shift offers a unique opportunity for the development of new tourist hotspots, dispersing the benefits of tourism to previously unexplored regions. By venturing into these uncharted territories, travelers can experience the authentic beauty and culture of Kashmir, while also contributing to the growth of local communities and the preservation of their traditions.
