LG’s ‘Awaam Ki Awaaz’ praises Dr Aftab, Rubeena

Duo express gratitude to LG for recognising their efforts

PAMPORE: Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, acknowledged the commendable efforts of Dr Aftab Ahmad Rather and Rubeena Jan during the “Awaam Ki Awaaz” programme.
Dr Aftab, founder of the Keegam Youth Trust, and Rubeena Jan from Tral, a pioneering female dairy farmer, received significant recognition for their contributions to societal betterment. Dr Aftab founded the Keegam Youth Trust in South Kashmir’s Shopian district with the goal of promoting environmental conservation and social change.
Expressing his joy at the LG’s acknowledgment, Dr Aftab said, “This is a happy moment for us. We are working hard to advance environmental awareness and community initiatives. When our efforts are recognized, it motivates other youth to contribute positively to society.”
Dr Aftab praised the LG administration for highlighting their grassroots initiatives. He believes such support is crucial for inspiring the youth and driving societal transformation. “We are encouraged by the LG’s mention and hope this recognition will inspire others across Jammu and Kashmir to engage in similar efforts and feel valued for their contributions,” he added. Dr Aftab also emphasized their commitment to addressing critical issues like drug abuse, plastic waste, and environmental conservation.
Rubeena Jan, who launched a dairy unit in April 2024, also received praise from LG Manoj Sinha, marking a significant milestone in her journey. Prior to this recognition, Rubeena had not received much acknowledgment, but her achievements since opening the unit have drawn widespread congratulatory messages.
Speaking to Kashmir Reader, Rubeena said, “Today, I am especially happy to hear praise from LG Manoj Sinha. I cannot express how thrilled I am and want to thank LG Sahab for mentioning my name. This recognition means a lot to me.”
Rubeena highlighted the importance of support in her success. “An individual cannot achieve much without support. The youth have been very supportive, and today, LG Sahab’s backing is particularly meaningful. His mention of me in ‘Awaam Ki Awaaz’ and acknowledging that a girl from Tral Pulwama has started her own livelihood is significant,” she stated. She credited her parents, relatives, JKNRLM, and J&K Bank for their support, emphasizing that financial backing is essential for success. “Without financial support, one cannot achieve much,” she concluded.
Rubeena, the first Gojar woman from Basmuny village of Sub Division Tral, has set a notable example of entrepreneurship by establishing a milk processing unit in her remote village. Supported by the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), her venture not only provides high-quality milk but also creates numerous local jobs, boosting the region’s economy. The unit processes milk into various dairy products, improving both accessibility and employment. Rubeena’s success has elevated local living standards and instilled hope in the community. She plans to expand her product range and explore new markets, demonstrating the potential for sustainable development in rural areas.
The LG’s appreciation of Dr Aftab and Rubeena underscores the value of local initiatives in promoting environmental conservation and empowering women. Both recipients expressed their gratitude and commitment to continuing their impactful work.
