DC Shopian bags national award for leading battle against drug abuse, illicit trafficking

SHOPIAN: In a remarkable achievement underscoring their dedication and relentless efforts, Shopian has been honored with the prestigious title of ‘Best Performing District’ at the national level for its exemplary work in combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking, particularly among children. The accolade was conferred by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), a premier organization advocating for child welfare in India.
The award ceremony, held in New Delhi, was graced by the presence of the Hon’ble Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai. On behalf of Deputy Commissioner Shopian, Faz Lul Haseeb, a senior officer of the district administration accepted the award.
Under the leadership of Faz Lul Haseeb, Shopian has demonstrated outstanding commitment and a strategic approach in tackling the menace of drug and substance abuse. The collaborative efforts of the district administration and law enforcement agencies have yielded significant results, positioning Shopian as a role model for effective governance and community engagement.
The award recognizes Shopian’s comprehensive initiatives, including stringent controls on the sale of scheduled drugs, widespread installation of CCTV cameras in pharmacies and medical stores, and strict enforcement of COPTA (Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act) provisions around educational institutions. The district has also implemented rigorous oversight of medical stores by Drug and Child Welfare Officers and engaged Prahari Clubs in schools to conduct training and awareness programs.
Notably, Shopian’s implementation of the Joint Action Plan has resulted in zero reported cases under Section 77 & 78 of the Juvenile Justice Act, concerning offenses against children.
Speaking with Kashmir Reader, Deputy Commissioner Fazlul Haseeb reiterated that the award recognized their comprehensive joint action plan, which included measures such as awareness campaigns among students and ensuring tobacco-free zones around schools.
Hes aid Shopian’s achievement stands as a testament to proactive governance and serves as an inspiration for other districts across the country in their fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Faz Lul Haseeb extended thanks to all stakeholders and the community for their unwavering support. He said the award not only validates their efforts but also reflects the community’s determination to combat drug abuse effectively. He reaffirmed their commitment to intensify efforts until the menace of drug abuse is eradicated completely from society.
