Messi fails to impress in Miami’s 1-0 win vs DC United

NEW DELHI: Inter Miami’s substitute Leo Campana scored a stunning goal in the dying moments of the match to secure a 1-0 victory over DC United on Saturday night. Despite the presence of Lionel Messi, who recently returned from a knee injury, Miami struggled to find their rhythm throughout the game.

Drake Callender’s impressive performance between the posts earned him his fourth clean sheet of the season and his second consecutive shutout.

The goalkeeper made three crucial saves, including a brilliant stop to deny DC United’s Cristian Dajome in the third minute of second-half stoppage time, just moments before Campana’s decisive strike.

Messi, who boasts an impressive tally of 10 goals and an MLS-leading 12 assists this season, had a relatively quiet night as the adverse weather conditions, including heavy rain and sweltering heat, hampered creative play. Despite the challenging circumstances, Miami maintained their record of scoring in every match that the Argentine superstar has featured in.

D.C. United goalkeeper Alex Bono made two saves in the match, as his team suffered their second consecutive defeat. However, the visitors displayed a much-improved defensive performance compared to their 4-1 home loss against the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night.

Campana’s match-winning goal was a moment of individual brilliance. Sergio Busquets launched a long pass from the midfield stripe, which Campana expertly controlled with the side of his foot before unleashing a powerful half-volley that struck the underside of the crossbar before crossing the goal line, sending the home crowd into raptures and securing a hard-fought victory for Inter Miami.
