Ensure children up to 12 yrs are allocated seats with their parents in flight: DGCA tells airlines

NEW DELHI: Aviation watchdog DGCA has asked airlines to ensure that children up to the age of 12 years are allocated seats with at least one of their parents or guardians in a flight.
The directive comes against the backdrop of instances of children below the age of 12 years were not seated along with their parents or guardians during the flight.
“Airlines shall ensure that children up to the age of 12 years are allocated seats with at least one of their parents/guardians, who are travelling on the same PNR and a record of the same shall be maintained,” the DGCA said in a statement on Tuesday.
Allocating seats for children up to 12 years old with their parents in flights is essential for several reasons:
Safety: Children, especially younger ones, may require assistance during the flight, such as help with seat belts, understanding safety instructions, or managing any anxiety they may have about flying. Being seated with their parents ensures that they receive the necessary support and supervision throughout the journey, enhancing overall safety onboard.
Comfort: Traveling can be overwhelming for children, particularly if it’s their first time flying or if they’re traveling alone. Being seated next to their parents provides a sense of comfort and security, helping to alleviate any stress or apprehension they may feel during the flight.
Supervision: Parents are responsible for their children’s behavior and well-being during the flight. When seated together, parents can closely monitor their children’s activities, ensuring they follow safety guidelines, remain seated when necessary, and behave appropriately throughout the journey.
Family bonding: Air travel presents an opportunity for families to spend quality time together, even during transit. Seating children with their parents allows families to interact, engage in conversation, and share experiences during the flight, fostering stronger bonds and lasting memories.
Emergency preparedness: In the event of an emergency, having children seated with their parents enables swift communication and coordination of actions. Parents can quickly assist their children, guide them to safety, and ensure they follow emergency procedures effectively, minimizing panic and confusion.
