Congress complains to EC about PM Modi’s Muslim League remark

New Delhi: Senior Congress leaders on Monday raised various complaints before the Election Commission, including one against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his remark that the party’s manifesto “reflects the Muslim League’s ideology and every page reeks of breaking India into pieces.”
A delegation of former Union Minister Salman Khurshid, Rajya Sabha MP Mukul Wasnik, Pawan Khera and Gurdeep Sappal met officials of the poll body at the Nirvachan Sadan.
The Congress also filed a complaint against the “continued use of Armed Forces in election campaigning by the BJP in violation of the MCC… despite previous instances of use of Armed Forces in political campaigning by the BJP being duly raised before this Hon’ble Commission”.
Another complaint was filed against Union Minister and BJP’s Thiruvananthapuram candidate Rajeev Chandrasekhar “for allegedly giving false information pertaining to his financial status in his election affidavit”.
A plaint was raised by the party against “life-size hoardings and banners of the PM installed in various colleges of the Delhi University under the ‘Viksit Bharat @ 2047: Voice of Youth Campaign’”, stating that it violates provisions of the Model Code of Conduct.
The grand old party also brought up the recent airing of the 2023 movie, The Kerala Story, by the public broadcaster Doordarshan recently. In its complaint, Congress described the film as a “work of fiction that vilifies a religious community and lends credence to the idea of Love Jihad being writ large in the country”. The complaint further said: “Publicizing such propaganda films could polarize voters, resulting in communal discord on the lines of religious identity, totally against the spirit of free and fair elections and the Model Code of Conduct.”
Lastly, the party has filed a complaint against the RO, Tripura West Lok Sabha constituency, alleging that they were “pressurising the candidate to share the commercial agreement between him and the vendor responsible for publishing banners and posters of the candidate; in the absence of any legal provision or provisions under the Model Code of Conduct requiring the same”.
