PULWAMA: In a historic moment for Indian and Kashmiri sports, Owais Yaqoob, the rising star of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) from Pulwama district in south Kashmir, showcased his exceptional skill by securing a unanimous decision victory in the 70 kg category against his Afghan opponent at the India vs Afghanistan MFN-14 MMA match held in Delhi.
As the first professional MMA fighter from Kashmir, Owais Yaqoob participated in the International Matrix Fight Night held at the Indoor Stadium in Noida, Delhi, proudly representing his country. His victory not only brought joy to Pulwama district but also filled the entire nation with pride. Owais Yaqoob expressed his ecstasy at the win and takes immense pride in representing his country.

Speaking to Kashmir Reader, Owais Yaqoob provided insights into the tournament, Matrix Fight Night 14, an international event featuring India vs Afghanistan, spanning five matches until March 9th. On March 9th, the competition comprised a total of 12 fights, with each featuring one bout per participant. Owais Yaqoob competed in the 70 kg weight category and emerged victorious in the Afghanistan vs India match.
Expressing his happiness, Owais Yaqoob stated, “I am thrilled to have represented my country and secured victory in this championship. I put in a lot of hard work for this tournament, and today, that hard work has paid off.”
Owais Yaqoob runs an academy called Lines Den Martial Art Academy in Pulwama, where 40 to 50 players are currently undergoing training. Some of these players have already won medals at the national level, demonstrating the growing interest and talent in MMA in Kashmir.
Furthermore, Owais outlined plans to organize programs focused on self-defense and other initiatives to promote MMA in the Kashmir Valley.
