Training on fish seed, trout production commences at SKUAST-K

Srinagar: A five-day training program on ‘Technology Intervention for Fish Seed and Trout Production in UT of J&K” commenced on Monday at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir.
The training is organised by the Directorate of Extension in collaboration with the National Centre for Management of Agricultural Extension (MANAGE), Hyderabad. The training is being conducted through online mode with participation from all over India.
Director, Extension, SKUAST-K, Prof Dil Mohammad Makhdoomi, who was the chief guest at the inaugural session, said that the Indian fisheries sector is receiving increasing attention and policy support owing to its nutritional significance, livelihood and foreign exchange potential. He informed the participants about the schemes implemented by the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying for the Development of the Fisheries Sector. He said that the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) was launched to bring about ecologically healthy, economically viable and socially inclusive development of the fisheries sector of India.
Dean, Faculty of Fisheries, Prof Farooz Ahmad Bhat highlighted the strengths and shortcomings of the fisheries sector in J&K. He said J&K has huge water resources which form almost 15% of the total inland area of the country and has huge potential for fish production of almost 2 lakh tonnes annually. He said the use of modern technologies like RAS, Biofloc, and smart hatcheries/farms involving IOT and AI facilities are need of an hour to meet the demand and have more and more entrepreneurship and livelihood in the fisheries sector.
Assistant Director, MANAGE Hyderabad, Dr K Sai Maheshwari, said the training, skill development and capacity building have been an integral part of fisheries development, especially for the adoption of new and innovative technologies by fisheries, fish farmers and other stakeholders in all fisheries-related activities.
The Central Institute, State Department of Fisheries, KVKs, Fisheries Research Stations and various State Agricultural and Fisheries Universities etc were selected as implementing agencies for providing Skill Development Trainings to the beneficiaries.
