Heartwarming gesture of communal unity as Muslims hold last rites of local Pandit in Pampore

Pampore, Kashmir: In a touching display of communal harmony, Muslim residents of Saffron Town Pampore united to assist in performing the last rites of a 68-year-old local Pandit who succumbed to a prolonged illness on Monday evening.
The deceased, identified as Ashok Kumar Wangoo, son of Radha Krishn Wangoo, a resident of Drangbal Pampore, received overwhelming support from his Muslim neighbors during the funeral proceedings. Demonstrating an exceptional example of communal unity and brotherhood, the local Muslims in Saffron Town Pampore, Pulwama district, collaborated to conduct the last rites as per Hindu traditions, as reported by locals to Kashmir Reader.
Tehsildar Pampore, Zuber Ahmad Bhat, along with his team, actively participated in the final rituals. Upon learning of Wangoo’s passing, Tehsildar Pampore visited the bereaved family’s home in the morning to offer condolences and engage in the funeral rites.
Locals shared that as soon as the news of Wangoo’s demise spread, the Muslim community in Saffron Town made special arrangements to facilitate the last rites. They not only provided support for the rituals but also supplied firewood to aid in the cremation.
This compassionate gesture stands as a shining example of solidarity within the community, locals remarked. Speaking to Kashmir Reader, a local Pandit, Raju Bhat, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received. He highlighted that the Muslim community took care of all arrangements, emphasizing a longstanding tradition of mutual support in times of joy and sorrow.
Bhat stated, “Whether in joy or sorrow, in every circumstance, our Muslim neighbors stand with us. This is a longstanding tradition, an expression of Kashmiri identity. It’s not a new thing, but in today’s context, it holds great significance.”
A civil society member, Mohammad Yousuf Malik, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the historical sense of brotherhood in Kashmir. Malik invited Kashmiri Pandit brothers to return, assuring them a warm embrace and expressing a shared desire for a prosperous coexistence.
In a diverse garden of religions, Kashmir seeks to nurture unity, fostering a welcoming environment for all communities. The gesture in Pampore reflects a commitment to preserving the rich tapestry of religious diversity in the region.
